From our famous flax seed loaves to hand-dipped donuts and custom cakes, every item is made by hand in our kitchen on Superior Street.

Breads

Baked the old German way — with steam in the ovens and over four hours from start to finish. Our flax seed loaves, sourdoughs, and specialty breads are made from recipes unchanged since 1908.

Over 115 years of tradition

A starter that's been alive since 1908.

Frederick Gunkel founded this bakery on Superior Street in 1908. Through ownership changes, expansions, and generations of bakers, one thing has never changed: the sourdough starter. Fed continuously for over a century, it is the living heart of everything we bake.

Today, Phillip Draeger's grandson Alex Kubeny carries on the tradition — baking flax seed loaves with steam in the ovens, the old German way, just as it has been done here since 1995.

Custom Orders

Need a birthday cake or a custom occasion cake? We make them to order. Give us a call ahead of time so we can plan the perfect treat for your celebration.

We also accept special bread orders for large quantities or specific varieties. Calling ahead is always appreciated.

Our breads, donuts, and pastries are made in small batches and sell out fast. Come in early for the best selection — we open at 7 AM Tuesday through Saturday.
